Introduction to Frustrated Magnetism

Part of the book series: Springer Series in Solid-State Sciences ((SSSOL,volume 164))

Abstract

This chapter presents a review of highly frustrated magnetism in spinels and in related compounds. We begin by emphasizing the uniqueness of the spinel structure as a testing ground for the physics of frustration and provide an overview of the materials aspects. We then discuss selected topics from the physics of spinels, including the formation of the spin-liquid state, novel spin–orbit–lattice coupling in the presence of frustration, magnetic-field-induced magnetization-plateau states and charge frustration in mixed-valent spinels.
