Abstract
Strongly acidic and strongly alkaline electrolyzed water (SAcEW, SAlEW) are readily prepared from water containing NaCl by direct current electrolysis. SAcEW has a strong bactericidal activity due to the high available chlorine (AC) concentration. We developed a compact device with a titanium-coated platinum electrode to provide SAcEW, and besides we developed an automatic controller for mixing SAcEW and SAlEW to make neutral electrolyzed water (NEW). Analysis of SAcEW and NEW was examined and our device confirmed the definition of electrolyzed water which had a strong bactericidal activity. This device is useful for making SAcEW and NEW as a disinfectant to employ at home care, when considering economic and environmental factors, since it returns to ordinary water after use.
