The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is one of the most commonly used technique in modern diagnostics. A modification of the standard ELISA is the competitive ELISA (cELISA). It is a suitable diagnostic tool for seroepidemiological surveillance in human and veterinary medicine and it is an established system for diagnostic of a multiplicity of pathogens. An advantage to other diagnostic methods is species independency, since the detection system detects the generic monoclonal antibody used for competition. For the same reason false positive results caused by cross-reactions with closely related pathogens are also reduced.
