The chapter aims to address, at least in part, the following questions: Is there a common European identity? In what does it consist? Is it historical and cultural or civic and political? Is it static or evolving? What is the role of ‘identity’ in contemporary politics in general and in Turkey’s relationship with Europe in particular? What does Turkey’s road towards European Union (EU) accession mean for the identity of Europe? Which political forces play the most with ‘identity politics’, why and in what ways? How do they compete in the case of Turkey? Of what should a successful accession strategy on the part of Turkey consist? And, what is and should be the role of Greece in the current debate?
