Less Common Complications of Breast Augmentation

  • Chapter
Breast Augmentation

Abstract

There are a number of possible complications in breast augmentation that are less common. Understanding what these complications are and how to prevent and/or treat them is important to the surgeon performing cosmetic breast procedures. These problems include areolar retraction, axillary banding, autoinflation, calcifications, galactorrhea, allergic reactions, malposition of the inframammary scar, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection, migration of the implant, myospasm of the pectoralis major muscle, necrosis, neurologic injury, periareolar scar indentation, synmastia (symmastia), thromboembolism, and toxic shock syndrome.
