Characterization of Polymer Surfaces by Wetting and Electrokinetic Measurements – Contact Angle, Interfacial Tension, Zeta Potential

  • Chapter
Polymer Surfaces and Interfaces

Abstract

The determination of the contact angle constitutes the most widely used surface characterization technique. It provides very valuable information on the wetting properties of the surface and is determined by the upper molecular layer at the surface. Looking more deeply into the background of the technique the interpretation is complex and some experimental guidelines should be followed when contact angles are used to calculate the interfacial tension of solid polymer surfaces. The zeta potential which is optained from electrokinetic investigations provides information about the charge distribution at the polymer-liquid interface. By combing contact angle and zeta potential measurements conclusions can be drawn about the surface chemistry with regard to polar or non-polar functional groups as well as acidic or basic sites available at the outermost surface region and to the interaction of the solid surface with liquids and surface-active substances.
