Abstract

Hydrodynamic non-LTE model atmospheres, applied to the interpretation of the spectral signatures of strong stellar winds from blue stars, provide the key for the determination of their intrinsic luminosities. Applying these methods to the interpretation of Ha emission profiles and infrared excesses of OBA stars in the Milk Way, the Magellanic Clouds, M31 amd M33, it is shown that the wind-momentum versus luminosity relationship is well defined. This relationship may thus be as an important new distance determination method, and with FORS II and the VLT it will be possible to use the brightest blue supergiants as distance indicators to galaxies as remote as Virgo. Furthermore these stars may be used to determine metallicities, in itself of inherent interest but also important given the metallicity dependence of the wind-momentum versus luminosity relationship discussed below.
