Abstract

We have measured the different types of whole blood and their separated components from adults and fetuses, normal persons as well as patients. The characteristics of the PAS spectrum of blood depend upon the molecular structure of heme. The spectrum varies with the density of hemoglobin, that is, the peak value ratio γ/β or γ/α becomes greater when the density is lower. There are differences among the PAS spectra of blood from some patients, such as anemia, leukemia and methemoglobin. Some simulated experiments have also been performed. It is believed that PAS technique will be a valuable tool in clinical diagnosis in hematology.
