Zusammenfassung
Lässt man die wissenschaftliche Psychologie, dem Gründungsmythos folgend, mit der Einrichtung von Wilhelm Wundts Leipziger experimentalpsychologischem Institut 1879 beginnen, ist zwangsläufig auch die Kulturpsychologie eine junge Erscheinung. Genauer betrachtet führt uns deren Entstehungsgeschichte jedoch weit vor die Anfänge der neuzeitlichen Wissenschaften in Europa zurück. Kulturpsychologische Perspektiven und methodisch durchaus anspruchsvolle, erfahrungswissenschaftliche Studien finden sich bereits in der griechischen Antike, etwa in Herodots „9 Büchern zur Geschichte“ (2004). Im Übergang zur frühen Neuzeit entstanden wegweisende theoretische und empirische Beiträge (Chakkarath 2003; Straub 2004a, 2007a). Ähnliches gilt für Traditionen außerhalb der okzidentalen Welt. Auf der Suche nach alternativen Konzepten zur Erforschung kulturspezifischer Phänomene wird heute vielfach auf die psychologische Bedeutung indigener (z.B. indischer, koreanischer, philippinischer, taiwanesischer, mexikanischer) Denk- und Forschungstraditionen hingewiesen, denen wissenschaftliche Seriosität in vielen Fällen schwerlich abgesprochen werden kann (Chakkarath 2005, 2007a, 2010/in Druck; Kim, Yang & Hwang 2006). Daran ist festzuhalten, auch wenn die Wissenschaftsauffassungen zwischen den Kulturen und innerhalb einer Kultur (diachron und synchron) erheblich voneinander abweichen können.
