Kollektive Sozialformen fördern Individualisierung, ja ermöglichen sie erst. Diese Einsicht ist sicher ein Allgemeinplatz der Soziologie. Ebenso weist Durkheim weist darauf hin, dass im Kollektivbewusstsein einer arbeitsteiligen Gesellschaft die Idee der Individualität die Gemeinsamkeit ist, die uns alle eint:
Sehr wohl gibt es einen Bereich, wo es [das Kollektivbewusstsein] sich gefestigt und präzisiert hat: dort, wo es das Individuum im Auge hat. In dem Maß, in dem alle anderen Überzeugungen und Praktiken einen immer weniger religiösen Charakter annehmen, wird das Individuum der Gegenstand einer Art von Religion. (Durkheim 1992 [1883]: 226)
