Erstmals wurde das Shopping Center in den USA Ende der 1950er Jahre definiert (McKeever 1957: 6). Ein Shopping Center stellt eine Gruppe von GeschÄften dar, die als Einheit geplant, entwickelt und gemanagt wird. Lage, Zahl und Art der GeschÄfte sind abhÄngig von der Grö\e des Einzugsgebiets, das es versorgt. Die Zahl der ParkplÄtze hÄngt ab von Typ, Grö\e und Standort des Shopping Centers. Diese Definition ist bis zum heutigen Tage fast unverÄndert geblieben und hat sich auch auf internationaler Ebene durchgesetzt. In den USA wurde in den 1920er Jahren das erste Shopping Center errichtet, seit Anfang der 1960er Jahre folgte der Bau von Shopping Centern in Europa und wenig spÄter auch in Japan. In den 1980er Jahren wurden sie vereinzelt auch in gro\en StÄdten au\erhalb der IndustrielÄnder eröffnet. In den vergangenen zehn Jahren setzte schlie\lich weltweit ein Bauboom ein. Inzwischen sind Shopping Center in fast allen Industrie- und SchwellenlÄndern, aber auch in einigen sehr viel weniger entwickelten LÄndern, wie in Indien, zu finden.
