Mikropolitik ist wie alle Politik der Versuch, auf soziale Strukturen und menschliche Verhältnisse gestaltenden Einfluss zu nehmen. Ziel von Mikropolitik ist es, „(...) Optionen zu sichern, Interessen zu realisieren, Erfolg zu haben“, wobei persönliche Eigeninteressen oder individuelle Karriereerwägungen häufig vorzufindende, keineswegs aber exklusive Motive für Mikropolitik sind (Schulz zur Wiesch/ Heinrich 1998: XVIII). Mikropolitik kann aus selbstsüchtigem Interesse oder weitgehend selbstlos, ja sogar aus altruistischen Motiven heraus betrieben werden (Ortmann 1988: 2). In größeren Organisationen, wie sie multinationale Unternehmen in aller Regel darstellen, sind mikropolitische Auseinandersetzungen eine Alltäglichkeit. Dabei schafft und verändert Mikropolitik organisationale Strukturen: Folgt man Burns (1961/ 1962), dem vielfach nachgesagt wird, den Begriff Mikropolitik erfunden bzw. in die Literatur eingeführt zu haben, ist Mikropolitik der wesentliche Mechanismus organisationalen Wandels (ebd.: 259). Dabei sind mikropolitische Auseinandersetzungen in unterschiedlicher Ausprägung von Sach- und Machtaspekten geprägt. Engeren Rationalitätserwartungen eher entsprechende Verläufe stehen neben Verläufen, die solchen Erwartungen entgegengesetzt sind.
