Zusammenfassung
Die Frage nach den Kriterien, nach denen das Publikum aus dem Angebot der Massenmedien auswählt, spielt eine zentrale Rolle für die Medienwirkungsforschung. Diese Kriterien entscheiden darüber, mit welcher Wahrscheinlichkeit bestimmte Botschaften überhaupt zu den Rezipienten durchdringen und dort eine Wirkung ausüben können. So werden von den durchschnittlich 65 000 täglich in deutschen Tageszeitungen veröffentlichten Wörtern nur ungefähr 5 400 auch wahrgenommen („information overload“, vgl. de Sola Pool et al. 1984; Brünne et al. 1987). Mit der ständig steigenden Zahl von produzierten Informationen nimmt auch die Bedeutung der Frage nach den Faktoren zu, die die Auswahl bestimmen. Selektionsforschung und Wirkungsforschung sind somit eng aneinander gebunden.
