Definitions
The former United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Kofi Annan met a group of the world’s largest institutional investors in 2005 where they were invited to take part in a process to develop the so-called Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI). These investors, 20 in total from institutions in 12 different countries, joint forces to develop the Principles. In their work, they had a support from a larger group of experts from the investment community, civil society, and intergovernmental organizations. In April 2006, the PRI was launched at the New York Stock Exchange. The UN is a supporter of the PRI, but PRI has two other UN partners which are the UN Environment Programme Finance Initiative and the UN Global Compact, both play a key role in the success of the PRI (PRI Association n.d.-a).
