Abstract
Schools play a significant role in the social and emotional development of children and can be an important context for providing support for grieving children, whether the death(s) are of family members or family friends, or of classmates or school staff. This chapter will focus on the unique aspects of supporting grieving children after the death of a member of the school community and in the context of a school crisis or disaster; many of the same principles and strategies are appropriate for assisting children grieving personal losses that do not impact directly others in the school. Practical advice will be offered for child mental health professionals who consult or otherwise advise schools, or who are in a position to provide relevant training or professional development to school professionals.
