Abstract
This chapter seeks to arm the psychiatric/mental health (P/MH) nurse with contemporary empirical and theoretical knowledge pertinent to working with individuals who present with eating problems—for some eating “disorders.” The chapter begins with a brief examination of the definition and diagnosis of eating disorders, followed by reviewing the relevant literature regarding the prevalence and incidence of eating disorders. The various theoretical explanations of the origins of these problems are examined. Then, the chapter explores current theoretical models and effectiveness: cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, family psychotherapy, medication/pharmacology, and nutritional counseling. The chapter closes by considering current developments and future directions for this area of mental health practice.
