Abstract
When wasta is called social capital, it is usually not without a touch of irony, based on a tacit assumption that the use of personal ties is divided into negatives and positives, or an honest and dishonest version of the practice. The less-than-noble system assumed has many names, usually in a local and often euphemistic jargon: in Russian, in German, or wasta in Arabic.
