Abstract

In this introductory chapter to explain and understand the concept of energy flows or power flows for various dynamical systems and its characteristics, we discuss some energy flow equations and their physical meanings developed for linear systems. Starting from a simple 1-DOF system consisting of a mass, a spring and a damper, we derive its energy flow balance equation and introduce the corresponding terms and concepts used in power flow analysis, and then we directly extend them into n-DOF system.
