Carotenoids

Part of the book series: Chemische Reihe ((LMW/C,volume 23))

Abstract

Carotenoids are tetraterpenes, and their overall biosynthesis must be expected to follow the general pattern for all terpenoids. The biological isoprene precursor is now known to be isopentenyl pyrophosphate (IPP, 1), and there is clear evidence that it is involved in carotenoid biosynthesis.
