Abstract

This chapter describes the task of this volume, namely a biological, mechanism-based explanation of the treeline phenomenon at a global scale. The need for a clear distinction between disturbance, stochastic effects or local peculiarities from overarching, not region-specific principles is explained. An overview of previous works in this field is presented by eco-region or continent.
