Abstract
According to Polish law, children with disabilities and youth who possess a special needs education certificate have the opportunity of learning in all types of schools (special, integration and public), depending on their individual developmental and educational needs and predispositions. This article addresses the issue of inclusive education and presents the results of a longitudinal study on the outcomes of educating students with disabilities (mild intellectual disabilities, autism, Asperger’s Syndrome) in public schools. The objective of this study was to identify selected outcomes of implementing inclusive education in the Polish education system while taking into consideration the educational and general developmental achievements of students with disabilities graduating in primary schools. An evaluation of certain factors in the process of inclusive education in the educational centres covered in the study was also included. Several references to the pandemic situation were introduced into the structure of the theoretical framework of this project and the analysis of the research findings. The study was conducted in 30 primary schools throughout the 2019/2020 school year. In each of these schools, one student with disability in the graduation process was included by analysing his/her accomplishments in Grades 6, 7 and 8. The research results allow us to conclude that more progress is made in their social functioning compared to their acquired school skills and knowledge. School principals have undertaken activities aimed at building inclusive education at their educational centres. However, there are still various kinds of barriers, at times difficult or even impossible to overcome. Schools are creating inclusive structures; however, the attitude of the parents of other students and the local community, which is not always friendly, is an evident problem.
