Abstract
Young people involved in the justice system are at a higher risk for suicidal behavior compared to their non-justice-involved peers. Risk factors for suicidal ideation and suicide attempts are more prevalent among court-involved, non-incarcerated young people than among general population adolescents. Further, detained youth are at an increased risk for suicide, with suicide rates three times higher than that of the general youth population. This chapter provides an overview of suicidal behavior among justice-involved youth. First, we present the prevalence of suicidal behavior among youth involved in the justice system. Then we explore the possible risk factors for suicide, including mental health disorders, past suicidal ideation and attempts, history of abuse and victimization, juvenile justice facility characteristics, and social factors. Next, we examine how diversity factors, such as sexual identity, gender, race, and ethnicity, impact suicidal behavior among justice-involved youth. Finally, we consider existing assessment and treatment options, highlight promising prevention directions, and provide recommendations for practice.
