Abstract
The discussion in this chapter is centred on the partnership of media, literacy and education for sustainable development based on the Letters for Life, an adult literacy community project. This example proposes an integrated approach to enhance sustainable development, with impacts on “Goal 4. Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” and “Goal 5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls” of the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” (UN, Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, A/RES/70/1, 2015).
To illustrate the positive impacts of the project, we use significant life narratives from the participants and we critically describe methodology and activities, which are a community-based participatory action research approach.
The project gives a contribution in providing equal learning opportunities for the elderly, enhancing intergenerational learning and promoting awareness of the importance of learning at an advanced age and, as a consequence, demonstrating that, at this stage of life, educational offers are not an expense but an investment for social inclusion, active citizenship, well-being and happiness.
In line with European efforts, Portugal has been active in pursuing the Sustainable Development Goals, but the level of achievement is still far from expectations. Our contribution to this mission is the work developed in Letters for Life project.
