Abstract
The present study attempts a new approach, Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), to measure the discharge and other parameters like velocity depth, etc. It also compares the same with the conventional method. ADCP discharge measurements were made at the eight sections of the river Ganga at Varanasi. The result obtained was analyzed by Win-River II Software. This study also compares the sediment distribution along with the upstream and downstream of Samne Ghat Bridge, Varanasi. It was observed that ADCP measures six out of eight sections more precisely as compared to conventional methods. Changes due to aggradations and degradations of the sediment particles along shores may damage the bridge, and river banks may be unstable. After the construction of the bridge, the river profile will be affected due to disturbance in the flow of the river water. This disturbance leads to the change of the present channel of the river.
