Abstract
This article presents the experience of the Sustainability Hackathon, an academic marathon on sustainability issues, hosted by SEEDS/PPGEPS/PUCPR in October 2019. The purpose was to gather together academia and companies for providing solutions for residuals from Brazilian companies, which otherwise would become waste with no value but with high negative environmental/social/economic impacts. During a three-day event, 57 undergraduate students from 10 different PUCPR courses, grouped into 11 teams, and under mentoring of teachers and with support from companies’ representatives, proposed and prototyped 11 solutions using materials selected from a list of 31 residuals brought by nine companies from different sectors. Both technical and popular juries evaluated the projects, and the three best in the technical category, as well as the best for the popular jury, won prizes. Four projects were selected for patent application and four for startup mentoring. Students, teachers and companies’ representatives were enthusiastic about the results and considered this type of event a powerful tool for raising awareness about sustainability issues and for stimulating multidisciplinary co-working and innovation.
