Abstract
Here we analyze the first cognitive steps for understanding the world both in terms of isolated properties of an external object (sensation) and of the object as a whole (perception). The chapter presents the basic properties of sensation (modality, intensity, duration, and spatial localization) and its contributions to vital bodily functions and discusses the question of the authenticity of sensations and perceptions. Human perception is conceived as a creative act of the individual, acquired and improved in the social and productive practice mediated by language. In perception, the object or phenomenon gets meaning by the subject’s active detection of specific and constant relationships between its different parts or properties, which requires a complex neurofunctional system constituted by various interconnected mental operations and brain regions.
