Abstract

This chapter analyses a technology which has become successfully embedded in higher education: the virtual learning environment (VLE). VLEs are ubiquitous in higher education and are used extensively. However, the chapter argues VLEs are a sustaining innovation, offering a marginal enhancement of pre-existing pedagogical practice but not comprising a disruptive innovation. The VLE has transformative potential but, in practice, it has been used within the main teaching paradigms in higher education, being educator rather than learner-centred. The VLE also accrues data on students, and the chapter analyses how the data can be used.
