  • First Online:
Vocabulary in Curriculum Planning

Abstract

This introductory chapter sets the stage for the rest of the contributions in this volume. It first defines needs analysis as one of the central terms of the book. It then elaborates on some of the ways in which vocabulary has unfortunately remained absent from the usual procedures of needs analysis in second and foreign language education, while pointing to some of the solutions provided in a number of chapters of the volume. Finally, the introduction summarises each of the following chapters, ending with several recommendations for the inclusion of vocabulary in need analysis.
