Handbook of Inpatient Cardiology

Abstract

Stable ischemic heart disease (SIHD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. The defining pathobiology of SIHD is an imbalance between the metabolic demands of the myocardium and its oxygen supply. This most often results from coronary artery disease (CAD). SIHD classically manifests symptomatically as angina, but clinical presentation can vary greatly among patients (See Chap. 24). Treatment is focused on both reduction in ischemic events and relief of symptoms.
