Mechanical Support for Heart Failure

Abstract

The BiVACOR TAH is a cardiovascular device designed to replace the entire function of a failing human heart. It is a latest generation device that uses maglev and rotary blood pump technology to suspend a single wear-free spinning disc, in wide, blood-friendly gaps to provide a long-term solution for heart failure patients. The pump is electrically powered with a small, external, portable controller via a single percutaneous driveline. Over the last years, the BiVACOR program achieved significant development milestones toward a first-article device; several features were incorporated to provide a small, durable, physiological, and biocompatible heart replacement.
