Abstract
Light is the ultimate source of energy for most of life on earth. Various living organisms can capture light energy and use it, e.g. plants and autotrophs can capture light energy and convert it through photosynthesis. Light is more than the driver of energy-demanding metabolic activities; it also reports on the state of the environment through its quality, intensity, and interaction with other environmental factors. The current chapter would give a suitable introduction on light, electromagnetic spectrum, and photobiology – the science of interaction between light and living cells. The use of light wavelengths to activate biological process is called photostimulation and the light type used is the photostimulators. The role of light wavelengths in activating various processes in microorganisms or photostimulation as it is called will be covered in this chapter. Polarized light, lasers, light-emitting diodes, and ultraviolet radiations (UV-A, UV-B) will be noted as a photostimulators. Photostimulation of various important bioprocesses in microorganism including fungi, bacteria, and actinomycetes will be elucidated in this chapter. Photostimulation results of different fungal species including Paecilomyces sp., Drechslera sp., and Chaetomium sp. will be demonstrated and presented in current chapters. An increase in conidial size, conidiophore diameters, or activation of biochemical pathway will also be expressed including photostimulation of silver nanoparticle production.
