Abstract

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) has estimated that 228,000 bariatric surgeries were performed in 2017 in the United States – a 13-fold increase since 1992 (ASMBS. Estimate of Bariatric Surgery Numbers [Internet]. Asmbs Org. p 1. Available from: http://asmbs.org/2014/03/estimate-of-bariatric-surgery-numbers/, 2014). The number of revisional bariatric procedures has progressively increased as well. Indications for reoperations in bariatric surgery are either related to failure of weight loss and weight regain or complications. Currently, the overall incidence of reoperations after any bariatric procedure is estimated to be between 5% and 54% (Altieri et al., Surg Obes Relat Dis 14:500–507, 2018). The wide range depends on the different types of primary operations. Based on the increase in the demand of reoperative bariatric surgery and the overall increase in both the morbidity and mortality of such procedures, it is necessary for bariatric surgeons and bariatricians to familiarize themselves with the different surgical scenarios. This chapter describes the importance of preoperative testing and the different types of reoperative bariatric procedures, explains the different indications for reoperative surgery, and discusses the morbidity and outcomes of reoperative surgery.
