Abstract
The objectives of this chapter are to describe existing studies of solvability factors and crime detection. The contents outline early research on the identification of solvability factors, the definition of ‘detection’, studies of high-volume and acquisitive crimes and violent crimes including homicide and sexual offences. There is also an examination of existing research into the ways in which resources and investigative effort affect solvability and case outcomes. Notable data quality issues and methodological challenges are considered. Finally, we assess the benefits of solvability analysis and the prediction of detection outcomes for policing practice.
