History and Epistemology of Mathematics: An Ever-Increasing Interest for New Conceptions and Practices in Mathematics Education

In the last 40 years or so, integrating history of mathematics in mathematics education has emerged as a worldwide intensively studied area of new pedagogical practices and specific research activities. However, already in the second half of the nineteenth century, mathematicians like F. Klein and A. De Morgan and historians like P. Tannery and G. Loria were showing an active interest in the role of the history of mathematics in education already. At that time, history enters into textbooks, e.g., in France in Rouché and Comberousse (Barbin et al. 2008, Chap. 2.2). At the beginning of the twentieth century, this interest was revived as a consequence of the discourse and the related debates on the foundations of mathematics.
