Abstract
Surgical complications are potentially encountered with all surgical procedures. Surgeons have the task of being aware of all potential complications, taking every effort to prevent them, identifying them when they do occur, and having the knowledge and skill to manage them. Complications can compromise patient outcomes and expectations, as well as present a significant source of anxiety for patient and surgeon alike. Robotic surgery of the bladder is not immune to the potential of surgical complications. In and of itself, bladder surgery can be a technically demanding procedure due to patient variability and the potential need for urinary diversion. Radical cystectomy, for example, is well recognized as a procedure associated with significant risks of complications. It has an associated morbidity that is reported in the literature to range from 28 to 64% and a mortality as high as 5.7%.
