Abstract

Cancer has been the leading cause of death in Japan since 1981. The number of cancer deaths in Japan in 2006 was approximately 329,000, and about 11,300 patients were due to esophageal cancer, thus making it the sixth most common cause of cancer death [1]. In Western countries the incidence of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus is increasing and the site is typically the lower esophagus or the esophagogastric junction [2]. In Japan, 93 % of esophageal carcinomas are of the squamous cell variety and 53 % of all esophageal carcinomas are located in the midthoracic esophagus [3].
