Protective and Regenerative Properties of GDNF in the Central Nervous System

  • Chapter
Neuroprotective Signal Transduction

Part of the book series: Contemporary Neuroscience ((CNEURO))

Abstract

Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) was isolated and cloned by Lin and colleagues (Lin et al., 1993, 1994) as part of a concerted effort to identify new trophic factors for midbrain dopamine (DA) neurons. Since the initial description of GDNF in 1993, studies from a number of laboratories have confirmed its potent effects on DA neurons. In addition, GDNF has been found to play an intricate role in the survival and development of a diverse set of neuronal and nonneuronal cells.
