Abstract
With the increase in distributed teams in organizations and the globalization of consumer markets, teams are becoming more diversified to cope with changing environments. Many teams have members that exist in varying locations both within a country and within different countries. Because of this, the team members are communicating through various virtual mediums, such as email, instant messaging, and video- and tele-conferencing software. These global, virtual teams (GVTs) face unique challenges, particularly when it comes to team training. This chapter considers the impact of virtuality on the communication across team members, how trust develops in the team, the cohesion among members, and team cognition in GVTs. It also explores the effects of culture on team communication, how leadership develops in these teams, the need for conflict management, and issues with the development of collective identity in GVTs. Different team training methodologies and strategies to mitigate these effects, such as team coordination and adaptation training, event-based approach to training, cross-training, team leadership and development training, and guided team self-correction training, are explored. Specific recommendations to developing and applying these team training methods to GVTs are provided.
