Essentials of Vascular Surgery for the General Surgeon

Abstract

Vascular trauma is a frequent sequel of severe extremity injury. The prompt and appropriate diagnosis of extremity vascular injury requires a systematic approach to both examination and the utilization of imaging modalities. Effective treatment is facilitated by the utilization of algorithmic approaches and timely intervention. Optimal outcomes require that the treating provider understand the limitations and benefits of available treatment options. This chapter is designed to summarize the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of vascular injury to the extremities. Limitations and common pitfalls will be discussed, and key technical elements of successful management reviewed.
