On Recognition Molecules in Circuitry (Pigeon Brain Mucoids in Training, Learning and Memory)

  • Chapter
The Future of the Brain Sciences

Abstract

The terms training, learning and memory are used independently in our studies to indicate different levels of certainty about the nature of an operational laboratory event, and different levels of complexity of concept. Each of these three is different from the general term “activity” in that a higher degree of ordered activity of the nervous System is implied. Each of the three is also different from the other two. Thus, when we State that an animal is training, or even more carefully, in the training Situation, we imply nothing about learning or memory except that these may or may not occur. When the term learning is used, it requires evidence of a changed response to a Stimulus, with elaboration of concomitant variables, as in several useful definitions cited in the recent monograph, THE BIOCHEMISTRY OF MEMORY: WITH AN INQUIRY INTO THE FUNCTION OF THE BRAIN MUCOIDS, Oxford U. Press, 1968 (4).
