Abstract
Variations in soil iodine content described in studies carried out in Ireland during 1938–39 resulted in the identification of regional pockets of endemic goitre1. A preliminary study of urinary iodine (UI) excretion in patients attending hospital outpatient clinics in the Dublin area published in 1988 demonstrated adequate iodine intake (Mean 118 ± 82 øg/g creatinine (I/C); median 96)2. This study also provided indirect evidence for improvements in dietary iodine intake by the finding that the mean 24 hour thyroid gland uptake 131I in patients with nontoxic goitre decreased from 48 ± 13% in 1963/1966; N=435 to 38±13% during 1983–86; N = 45. The objective of the present study was to provide a more comprehensive study including the general population in different regions of Ireland. As it has been suggested that milk provides a major source of iodine intake in Northern European countries3,4,5 it was proposed to obtain an impression of dietary iodine intake in Ireland by measuring dairy milk iodine content.
