Abstract

Human adaptations in periglacial Eurasia at the close of the Pleistocene, from ~ 15,000 to 10,000 B.P., are of special interest because they not only reflect lifeways during a period of climatic and environmental changes, but also document great variability. In the ensuing discussion, I assume that the natural environment that groups were adapted to was a region-specific one and compare the adaptive possibilities for groups in two regions: the central Russian Plain and along the middle course of the Enisej river in Siberia. I do so by considering adaptations using data from two important open-air sites: Iudinovo (also transliterated as Yudinovo) and Kokorevo I.
