Abstract
One of the most important tasks for Paleolithic archaeology is to establish an absolute chronology for Upper Paleolithic sites on the East European Plain. Without such a scheme, we cannot understand the evolution of Pleistocene hunter-gatherer groups and their cultures. Given that Paleolithic archaeology has a number of established analytic methods that can be used for chronological constructs such as lithic typology, stratigraphy, geology, palynology, and paleozoology at its disposal, it is surprising that to date we do not have a robust chronology for this area. A number of factors are responsible for this state of affairs.
