Preliminary Results from Psychophysical Studies on the Tactile Sensitivity in Marine Mammals

  • Chapter
Sensory Abilities of Cetaceans

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 196))

Abstract

Psychophysical studies with animals that investigated their capability to identify objects within the environment by tactile senses are rare. Nevertheless, there do exist studies on mammals, especially on species with prehensile extremities like hands and paws, as in primates and procyonidae (Rensch and Dücker, 1963; Davenport et al., 1973; Jarvis and Ettlinger, 1977). However, many other terrestrial mammals, for example pigs, do not use their extremities for tactile investigation of the environment, but the region around the snout (Fuchs and Dücker, 1988).
