Abstract

The highly polymorphic nature of Variable Number Tandem Repeat (VNTR) loci have made these DNA markers useful in the examination of the genetic structure of human populations (Hartmann et al., 1994; McComb et al., 1995a). A VNTR locus is characterized by a sequence of DNA bases which is repeated over a section of DNA. The number of repeats is variable, sometimes few in number, and thus exhibiting a small allele. In other cases, the repeats are numerous, and the locus has a large allele. Thus, a VNTR allele can be characterized by its length.
