Advances in Antimicrobial Polymers and Materials

  • Chapter
Biotechnology and Bioactive Polymers

Abstract

Significant advances in the last three decades are reviewed for the synthesis and application of polymers and fibers to prevent microbial attack and material degradation. Diverse end uses for polymers and fibrous materials can be subdivided into aesthetic, biomedical and preservation of materials. During this period, the concepts and techniques of controlled release, permanent biobarrier and microencapsulation were formulated. This led to the discovery of several new polymers with bioactive groups and resultant materials with resistance to various microorganisms. Methods were developed for the early detection of microbial infiltration on surfaces. Factors that promote adhesion to and persistence of bacteria and fungi on surfaces and polymers are discussed. Such adhesion is based on fundamental interactions between microbes and polymer surfaces. Similar modes of attachment of viruses occur via adsorption on polymer surfaces. A prospective is also given on how related disciplines and newly mandated health regulations for protective clothing may lead to further advances in the understanding and development of new and effective antimicrobial polymers and fibers.
