Abstract
In earlier work we demonstrated that the carbohydrate abnormality in Tay-Sachs’ Disease was not confined to the brain gangliosides, but that there was in addition a generalized increase in glycoprotein hexose and hexosamine (4). One glycoprotein fraction, 10B, was found to be markedly increased in concentration. It was noted that this might be a function of the marked gliosis, since there was other evidence that 10B is a glial constituent. In that report, the information functions of the brain glycoproteins was proposed, and in related studies (summarized in reference 1) the general function of brain glycoproteins in intercell recognition was proposed (“Sign-Post” Theory).
