Abstract

Approximately 28,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States, making pancreatic cancer the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths.1 The incidence of pancreatic cancer is highest in the sixth to eighth decades. At the time of diagnosis, 50% of patients have distant metastasis and only 10% to 15% of patients have resectable lesions, while the rest have locally advanced disease.2,3 Although 5-year survival rates of 15% to 21% following “curative” resection have been reported, the true overall 5-year survival for the disease is dismal, less than 3%.4
