Abstract

Endometrial carcinoma has become the most common invasive neoplasm of the female genital tract in the United States. In 1984 there were an estimated 39,000 new cases and 2900 deaths from endometrial cancer.161 A rising incidence has been observed also in Canada and western and eastern Europe.11,92,182 There is a much lower incidence in Asia, Africa, and South America than in North America.43 Migration studies of Japanese women who have a low incidence of endometrial cancer in Japan show an increase in the rates of endometrial carcinoma in first and second generations born in California.66 These findings have been attributed to the high content of animal fat in the Western diet,64 but this does not explain the dramatic rise in the incidence of endometrial carcinoma in the United States and Europe.
