Neoplastic Human Glia Cells in Culture

  • Chapter
Human Tumor Cells in Vitro

Abstract

The panorama of human malignant tumors is by far the best described in nature. Over 100 different histogenetic varieties are known, and their biological traits have been abundantly documented. Their in vitro characterization lags far behind, however, mainly because of the considerable technical difficulties involved in establishing cultures from human neoplastic tissue. Primary explants usually yield only necrobiotic neoplastic cells which rapidly die out. Such cultures have found a limited use in connection with certain morphological problems, but have in the main been disappointing. Permanent lines of proven neoplastic origin which would be of much greater general value are still few in number. It would be of immense importance if a method could be invented by which all types of neoplasia could be reproducibly grown in the laboratory in long-term culture.
